Why Drone Racing is Different There is a very good reason why ESPN has begun televising drone races just a few weeks ago: popularity. Dubbed an aerial version of NASCAR by CNet, drone racing has become wildly popular in a very short amount of time. Americaââ¬â¢s first national drone racing championship was only held in summer of 2015, so the fact that ESPN is jumping on the sport during its infancy is impressive. As with video games, drone racing requires top-notch hardware, excellent skill and solid strategy to master. Unfortunately, the two fields are also similar in that they are often sports of the affluent. Even so, the fact that drone racing is one of few sports that requires sheer wit versus physical prowess is what makes it so different compared to traditional sports like football or baseball. Drone racing has the added appeal of immersion, both for racers and spectators alike. All drone racers are required to have what are essentially ââ¬Å"drone goggles,â⬠which carry a live video feed from the droneââ¬â¢s on-board camera. This gives much of the sport its name: first-person view drone racing, otherwise known as FPV racing. The first-person perspective assists in navigation and in detecting rule violations. Itââ¬â¢s also streamed to a monitor so the audience can see what is happening both from the droneââ¬â¢s point of view as well.
